Example #4 – Causes of Missed Free Throws

 

The example below shows what a fishbone diagram might look like for a basketball team focusing on its free-throw percentage.

While it is rare that a basketball team would use a fishbone diagram, examples like this can be very helpful when teaching the concept of a fishbone diagram.

In this particular example, a basketball team found a total of 11 potential causes impacting their free-throw percentage.  The causes were grouped into a total of 4 categories:  (a) ball, (b) shooter, (c) shooting mechanism, and (d) hoop & backboard.
